Early Recording Session, 2003

July 2nd, 2007

Cardboard Mirror proudly announces the release of TT01.  Tom Thayer is a s/t LP pressed in a limited edition of 550, with signed and numbered, hand-printed covers.

It is a strange record. It was recorded over a four-year period in Tennessee. Six thousand, two hundred and forty minutes of music were recorded in the production of the record. That’s one hundred and seventy records worth.

The record is an artifact of an intense exercise. My goal was to create something highly personal.  The path I took led me further and further inward. On the outset I was using traditional electronic musical instruments. To better illustrate the  patchwork of memories and sensations I was submerged in, I eventually found it necessary to make my own, personal-instruments (like my “guitar” pictured below) .

The music  sounds strange and broken.  It wasn’t enough for me to  illustrate these feelings and then shut them off. I wanted to live inside the music I was creating. I needed to feel the way the music sounded. I wore a strange haircut, I made my own clothes to wear when I recorded.  People were always staring. They didn’t like me. They could sense something was off.

Last Recording Session, 2006

It wasn’t all bad in those days though.  Once I was in a thrift-store and tried to buy a small glockenspiel. The cashier put it in a bag without taking any money. She pointed to the door, and in a quiet, sympathetic voice said “Just take it. Go.”
